Intrinsic capacity

From Longevity Wiki

Intrinsic capacity is a composite of five domains that summarizes the physical and mental capacities of an individual: sensorial, cognition, nutrition, mobility, and psychological as defined by the World Health Organization.[1][2][3]

The most commonly used tools for assessing intrinsic capacity (IC) were gait speed test and chair stand test (locomotion); handgrip-strength and mini-nutritional assessment (vitality); Mini-Mental State Examination (cognition); Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (psychological), and self-reported vision and health questionnaires (sensory). A standardized intrinsic capacity composite score for clinical or community settings has not been operationalised yet.[4]

Intrinsic capacity decline is an important predictor of adverse health outcomes and can identify individuals at higher risk of functional decline. Interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha may potentially indicate changes in intrinsic capacity suggesting that chronic inflammation may accelerate IC decline by being involved in various IC domains, particularly in the locomotion, vitality, cognition, and psychology domains.[5]
